The Hybrid Solar Eclipse of 2006 November 03 begins in the North Atlantic as an Annular eclipse, but the umbra very soon touches down on the surface of the earth and the eclipse becomes total. It remains total for the rest of the path, which sweeps into the south Atlantic and comes ashore for the first time in Africa just south of Libreville in Gabon. The path of totality then crosses Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda before sweeping across Kenya including Lake Turkana in the path of totality. The umbra leaves the earth at sunset in Ethiopia after crossing most of that country with rapidly decreasing duration. Maximum eclipse occurs at UT12:46:22 in the Atlantic (11 deg 40.0´ E and 3 deg :29.5´ N) with a duration of 99.5s and magnitude of 1.0159. This location is south-east of Monrovia in Liberia.
There are not too many suitable (safe) locations in Africa to view this eclipse, which should, because of the short duration of totality have excellent displays of edge phenomena such as Baily´s Beads, the chromosphere and diamond ring. Libreville should be a good starting point for maximum (land based totality) and Lake Turkana in Kenya for a real esoteric experience. This location receives 15s of totality at 14h25UT.
